Everything You Need to Know About Dog Houses

Dogs that spend a lot of time outside, deserve dog houses. It protects them from the weather and gives them a personal sanctuary. Dog houses should be sturdy and built to last.

Your Checklist When Shopping for Dog Houses

Use this checklist when you are shopping for dog houses. There are a lot of possibilities when you're shopping for dog houses. Do you need a large or small one? Should it be heated, or insulated? Do you want something stylish like a log cabin, or just a plain wooden dog house?

The market for dog houses is huge, and this can mean a lot of comparison shopping and difficulty finding the perfect fit. Here are some tips you can keep in mind when you're shopping for dog houses:

  • Your climate is the top factor. For hot, arid places, dog houses should be ventilated. For cold areas, you should look into insulated dog houses, and maybe even heated ones. Stylish dog houses are nice, but don't forget to buy something functional.
  • The dog house should be big enough for bedding. The bedding should be removable (or purchased separately) so it can be washed regularly.
  • Dog houses should also be big enough for your dog to stand up in. Think ahead about your dog's growth, if he's not fully-grown yet, so you don't wind up having to buy a second dog house later when he grows up.
  • If you're looking at heated dog houses, always buy from a well-known brand. Make sure the wiring and the heating elements are completely unreachable to your curious dog, and research the specific models to make sure the reviews are good.
  • Make sure you can put the dog house somewhere that's in the shade, and preferably protected from the wind. You might elevate the dog house, to help keep the temperature inside more moderate when the ground is frozen or hot.
  • Make sure the dog house is well-built - you don't want splinters, loose nails, sharp corners or anything flimsy.
